![]() ![]() As someone already mentioned soldering the crystal is the hardest part but there are several good tutorials on the web. A piezzo speaker ripped out of a musical greeting card soldered to a shielded guitar cable was as cheap as it gets! You can also get piezzo buzzers from R.Shack and get the crystals out of those. In my opinion, it would be best to glue in the nut wiht a piezo below, but as for now I have only one elastic piezo for the tests.Hi everyone long time reader, first time poster! Awesome forum with only one drawback: it's highly addictive!!!Īnyhows back in the day when I didn't have an electric guitar, I searched for a way to cheaply "electrify" my acoustic. The nut in biscuit bridge is bit taller that in an acoutstic guitar, not sure about stability. To michael MX - yes, I know that with piezo it's all about the squeeze :) I'll just have to make a new biscuit, route a new wire channel with the diameter exact to top edge of the resonator cone. To tomtt2 - thank you for the advice, I'll definitely give it a try. If I fail to make a piezo pickup that does not perform as I expect, I'll probably end up buying commercial product It is a challenge for me to find best diy solutions without sacrficing quality of the final product. I enjoy this build very much, and I'd like to make this guitar as good as possible. As for the Fishman (or any other commercial piezo pickup system) - I consider it as a last resort. I`ve also tried to mount the piezo with a double sided carpet tape (to held the disc in place) and a mentioned screw but the result was pretty much the same as with the cork. I`ve used cork to attenutate treble response and sensitivity but it did not work as expected. I'll try to remove the cork and mount the disc directly to the bottom of the cone. To Howard Parker - disc is held by the same screw that holds the biscuit bdidge, and yes, I have isolated the disc from the cone (with a cork). Hope this helps you with a great looking project. It is still pretty sensitive, so you have to be gentle with your slide work. This setup works well with a resonator and there is no hum or buzz. Then I solder the leads to a combination audio jack/strap attachment in the end of the guitar body. I twist the Piezo wires, then insert them in some small diameter shrink tubing. Instead I use double sided tape to attach the Gatorade cap to the bottom of the cone. Since the Piezo is so sensitive, I place part of a cotton ball over the piezo to dampen the sound a bit.ĥ. Once the silicon has cured, I apply another layer of silicon over the Piezo so that it is effectively sealed in silicon.Ĥ. I cut a small slot for the Piezo wires to go through.ģ. I apply a thick layer of silicon seal to the inside of the Gatorade cap then seat the piezo into it. A 27 mm fits into the inside of the cap very nicely.Ģ. I use an orange Gatorade cap as the basic mount for the piezo. I find that I get very authentic sound from the Piezos.Īfter much trial and error, I found that I get the best results from the following Piezo setup.ġ. I have them in both of the resonators I built. I use 27 mm Piezo disc on a regular basis. Of course, I cannot rule out that I have cheap, low quality or even broken wire piezo transducer. Is there any insulation between piezo braided copper wire and aluminium resonator cone? Or maybe it's compressed in the channel by top edge of the resonator cone? How tight is the fit between channel in the maple disc and piezo wire? What is the diameter of the routed wire channel in relation to top of the resonator cone? Is it smaller, same size, does not matter? Do you have any experience with this type of pickups? I expected better results from wire piezo but I hope there is a room for improvement. tame down sensitivity of the disc piezo by cropping the disc from 27mm to 10-15mm ![]() what are my options to improve performance of the piezo pickups? I could try to The other piezo - elastic wire, has lower output signal, plays much quieter. It sounds like regular electo-acoustic guitar. Disc piezo gives loud and clear sound, with lots of treble, but there is no resonator feel in the sound. I can switch between disc and wire piezo. Second transducer - it's a flexible piezo wire mounted in a biscuit bridge (something like a Highlander IP-1X).īoth piezos are wired through a switch to a preamp. There is a 1/16" (2mm) layer of cork between the cone and piezo disc. I've mounted two piezo pickups.ĭisc type piezo is screw mounted to the bottom of the resonator cone. Guitar is temporarily assembled for the testing purposes. It has a National Resolectic body shape, 25.5" scale, Beard resonator with biscuit bridge, p90 in neck posiotion. ![]() I'm in the process of building solidbody resolectic guitar. Came here looking for some help with piezo pickups. I am an amateur guitar builder, new to the ResoHangout and resophonic guitars. ![]()
