I hope more people post their progress.Located in the heart of Central Auckland’s vibrant and creative Karangahape road area, Sunset Tattoo is setting the standard as New Zealand’s leading custom tattoo art studio. That is not the fault of the shop really as much as it is the other people who got it, and it took some time to get off the ground. However, their communication and customer service was wonderful and they seemed genuinely excited and proud of their work. I have seen basically nothing about the healing and fading process, but there are what looks to be realistic process photos on their Instagram. ![]() I mainly see ads and posts on websites from people reviewing the initial process which is just like every other tattoo shop. The main issue I have is the lack of testimonies from other people. I'll have to wait to see other people's experiences and my own fading process. I will say it doesn't seem as faded until put up against the fresh photo. The fading really began at around the 6 month mark. I guess I won't know until the end of this year at least to see if other people are in the same boat as me. It will probably take even longer than that for it to completely go away, and I am planning on committing to the design with a permanent tattoo once this eventually fades. Part of me is genuinely concerned it will not fade, but I also have about 3 more months to see. April 13 marks a year and while the fading is spotty, it's still pretty legible. I have a tattoo with large blocks of shading and even then, the itching went away after 2-3 days at most. I have tattoos all over my body and the healing process was a lot quicker and not itchy at all. I had to wrap the tattoo with various layers at night because I was scratching in my sleep. Not even joking when I say it was almost 2 months of near constant itching. I cannot tell if it was a reaction with the ink, an eczema flare up (despite not getting it on my legs ever) or what, but the itchiness was unbearable. I have sensitive skin and eczema on the upper part of my body. You also have to keep up with it for longer than normal tattoos (almost a month of daily cleaning and moisturization. Admittedly, it's a lot to remember and at times I was annoyed having to do it all. They provided me with everything I needed like the aftercare balm, the bandage, etc. The healing process is specific and unlike normal tattoos. My tattoo was fairly detailed and is about 2.5-3 inches big, and I believe it took almost 2 hours. Despite the linework being as fine as it could've been, it took multiple passes over certain spots. Because of this, it hurt more than my tattoos normally do. I suspect the ink was difficult to work with based on some other testimonies I saw, so my artist had to go a bit slower. Several other people were getting tattoos when I was there. He had the stencils ready when I came in, the whole team was welcoming and I loved the layout of the shop. I sent in multiple designs and the artist liked the challenge of tackling the tarot card I sent, and the whole process went smoothly. When I saw the ad for the clinical trial, I was interested in the idea as I had some tattoo ideas I wanted to test out before I actually committed to them. ![]() I have permanent tattoos before anyone tries to come for me. They contacted me in February of 2021 to let me know I was chosen and I was able to get a design of my choice for free in exchange of sending them periodic updates over the next six months. I was one of the first to get the tattoo, and it was done for free after signing up for a clinical trial on a whim back in 2020. I haven't seen any pictures from anyone who has had the tattoo as long as me so I figured I post my experience and an update. ![]()
